A key problem that is often disregarded by society is injuries from falls. This is often the case as falls are often treated as a non-life-threatening injury and merely a slight inconvenience. However, for some communities, this is not the case. Through the progression of age, numerous health complications start to arise such as weakened joints, brittle bones, etc. As such, the elderly community is among the highest risk and most susceptible group to experience fatal or high-risk falls as shown in multiple accounts in research papers and notable sources such as the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) which reports that in 2018 alone, 36 million falls were recorded with an approximation of one-third of all falls being reported for people of age 65 and above which is often critical for elders. Therefore, our project the “MonkeBand Lite” was conceptualized with the sole purpose of reducing the fatality rate of elderly falls. To achieve this, the root causes for this problem were determined to be due to mainly health conditions such as weakened bones, loss of sense of balance due to old age, slippery surfaces, lightheadedness due to drop in blood pressure, or the decrease in cognitive function due to old age. By determining these factors and compiling them into an Ishikawa Diagram, it was clear that there were too many factors that could lead to falls happening, and creating a method or device to solve this issue would be impractical and inefficient. Due to that, an alternate approach was taken to solve the issue of elderly falls. Based on another statistic by the German Resuscitation Registry, there was a 23% increase in survival rates when comparing a response time of an 8min delay. This concludes that to guarantee the highest chance of recovery and survival, immediate medical attention is recommended as seen in the research done by the German Resuscitation Registry, where there was a 23% increase in survival rates when comparing response times with an 8min delay. Thus, our product’s objective is to provide better communication and awareness especially when an elderly person or an ill person falls. This project aims to design a minimalistic, sleek, and economical fall detection strap known as the “MBand Lite”. The MBand Lite is a fall detection system that uses an accelerometer + Gyroscope (MPU 6050) to track the motion of the subject wearing the watch. This will allow the watch to detect a sudden shift of movement thus recording it as a fall. From here, the False Alarm Alert system would activate to notify the wearer that a fall was recorded and would require the user to launch a manual override. If the user is not responding. The communicative part of the device (ESP-32 module) will then initiate contact with the legal guardian as well as the emergency services. All this will be housed in a silicone-made strap for comfort and a stylish look. This product manages to distinguish itself from the other competitors due to its simplistic functions and economical price point, the cost of manufacture using off-the-shelf items would cost around RM60 while mass manufacturing with in-house components would drop the cost down to approximately RM20. This in turn would allow us to sell the item for a very low price starting at RM 79.99 for commercial consumers and RM 49.99 each for uses in the medical industry such as hospitals etc. This is an extremely low price point for this type of system as compared to other such systems such as the “MyNotifi System” which costs about RM 900 or the “Apple Watch” which costs RM 1799 as of now. Due to this, the “Mband Lite” can target a wider audience of consumers as compared to the other competition. Through the use of this product, the fatality rate will drastically decrease as medical aid response time drops dramatically.
