Investigation of optimum condition to cultivate dry bacteria for wastewater treatment purpose

Demand in the food products have increased steadily which results in more release of food waste in the effluent in recent years. Parameters such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Suspended Solid (TSS) have been observed to be extremely high which makes the food wastewater to be characterized as relatively high strength. To reduce the toxicity in food wastewater, biological treatment is used to degrade the dissolved organic matter with the aid of bacteria under aerobic and anaerobic condition. Dry bacteria could be applied to treat food wastewater treatment for easier operation and maintenance However, the effect of dosage and operating conditions on dry bacteria growth and COD removal is unknown. This study aims to investigate the optimum conditions required for the cultivation of dry bacteria in the synthetic food industry wastewater. Operating conditions such as pH, temperature and dosage is varied in the analysis of dry bacteria in synthetic wastewater. Two responses, COD removal and VSS obtained, will be used to evaluate the parameters. The biomass growth and the COD removal increased with increasing pH of the wastewater sample. When the temperature of the sample is increased, the biomass growth increased significantly but the removal of COD showed a decline. When dosage is increased, the pH and growth of biomass increased but the COD removal showed the opposite trend instead. The optimum conditions required for dry bacteria cultivation in food industry wastewater is of pH 7, temperature at 35°C and dosage of 0.1 g.
