2020 has admittedly been a difficult year for most. I Belanja You Lah, based on Lotería, a traditional Mexican card game, hopes to inspire people to lend a helping hand to those who have struggled and especially those who battled at the frontlines.
The recent pandemic has greatly impacted the lives of countless people on a global scale, both mentally and physically. Those who have been stuck at home, cut off from their families and friends, for those working remotely, for those who might have struggled with their mental health - but especially for those who risked their lives at the frontlines of the pandemic. People who were affected are struggling and in dire need of support from their community. The importance of awareness of health precautions and paying attention to those in need, has never been greater.
"I Belanja You Lah" is Malaysian slang that is commonly used when someone is settling bills for you. The phrase is synonymous with ‘I got you covered’. The game is inspired by Lotería, a traditional Mexican game. The rules of the game are similar to that of Bingo, easy to play and fun in groups. It includes a deck of 54 cards, 20 unique playing tablets and game markers.
To honour our heroes of the year, I Belanja You Lah aims to raise funds through a partnership with local charity organisations and NGOs based in Malaysia. With this phrase and our striking illustrations; which depict the frontliners in action and other all too familiar scenes from the past year, we hope to raise awareness about adapting to these unforeseen circumstances in a way that is both enjoyable and engaging while raising funds for those at the frontline of the pandemic.
