iPlantation Mobile

This project is to develop an application with camera-based image recognition to identify and diagnose plant disease on mobile devices. The application enables users to identify plant disease and know efficient and suitable solutions without any expert knowledge.

Nowadays, various diseases threaten production as they reduce crop yield or lower the quality and plant disease has a big potential of affecting the Malaysian economy. Farmers have relied mainly on visual observation of leaves and fruits and personal experience to identify diseases. Lack of trained, skilled experts and limited resources have caused the incidence rates of these preventable plant disease cases to be much higher in Malaysia. They seek expert intervention when the problem is not solved. Currently, there is no useful and feasible solution for those issues. Hence, This project is to develop an application with camera-based image recognition to identify and diagnose plant disease on mobile devices. The application enables users to identify plant disease and know efficient and suitable solutions without any expert knowledge.
This application push data, such as weather data and geolocation data to the cloud in order to analyze data for improvement of recognition as well as forecast the outbreak of plant diseases later. This application will be for Android devices and provide efficient solutions for both company users and farmers. In the back-end system, AWS which is one of the most reliable cloud computing solutions has been utilized to develop this application. Also, deployed APIs provided by AWS has been used in the mobile application to solve differences in the computational performance among smartphones. In other words, the performance of disease recognition does not depend on the performance of the user's smartphone. Therefore, our application enables everyone to have a digital agricultural platform with a smart decision-making function.
